Using Yahoo Maps to Fight Global Warming

Australian Priscilla Brice-Weller has written up another cool use of maps for advocacy purposes, in this case to encourage the transition from incandescent light bulbs to compact flourescents (which are much more energy-efficient). The Yahoo-sponsored site 18 Seconds (named for the time required to change a lightbulb) shows the number of bulbs currently purchased in each U.S. state and the amount of money saved as a result, plus the amount of coal NOT burned and the number of cars that would have to be pulled off the road to have as much effect on overall carbon emissions. Nice work! Reminds me a little of Clear The Air’s Powerplant Pollution Locator, but based on Yahoo Maps instead of a custom map.

• The Internet flatters us with attention in a way that Hollywood no longer can. Beware: think piece ahead (goats conspicuously absent).
• Battling for Netroots Support. Edwards, no longer just the Breck girl, is currently the “it” girl as well.
• But, perfect hair notwithstanding, John Edwards still has no friends! No one loves him on several of the social networking sites on which he has a profile. Goats apparently still withholding judgment.
• Mischief In Campaign Videos. Looks as though EVERY candidate’s gonna be the subject of a create-your-own-ad contest. Edwards supporters, prepare your shower scenes (now that’s one clean goat!).
• Today in History: Tim Berners-Lee Introduces the Web Browser. Look at all the quality goodness we have to thank him for.

Tia’s Famous: Blog Carnival Picks Up Web Project Planning Story

Tia Sumler’s article from last week (Five Must-Dos When You’re Planning A Web Project) has just been chosen as the lead story in this week’s Carnival of Nonprofit Consultants. Very cool! It was an excellent article, well-written and with just the right bit of no-bullshit attitude — a fine piece of sass if I ever read one. You might just be seeing more of Tia in the coming weeks, assuming that new-found blogger fame doesn’t send her into an Anna Nicole-style spiral of excess and self-abuse (note: cocaine’s a hell of a drug, or so I hear).
