What's new to think about?
The last few weeks I’ve been scratching my head trying to figure out where Twitter is going. From what I’ve seen the implementation of the new algorithm is pretty clumsy at best and doesn’t make a lot of sense. I wonder how many people besides myself they’re annoying with notifications via email that don’t stop coming no matter what you do and mobile notifications that have no rhyme or reason to them. The one bright spot is Periscope.
In case you were consumed w/something else last week, at SXSW the live streaming app Meerkat made a huge splash and then days later Twitter debuted Periscope. I’ve heard many say this could have really changed things in Ferguson- maybe, maybe not. For sure though this can be a really valuable tool for us in the political/advocacy space. Real time live streaming complete with chat - viewable on platforms people are already watching #ftw. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn Facebook is working on something similar but I have no proof, just gut instinct. Neither app is available yet for android so I’ve not played w/either but anecdotally everyone I’ve talked to likes Periscope hands down.
What say you?

Tools
Two new tools popped on my radar screen this month:

Platform Updates
As social media practitioners, one of our biggest challenges is keeping up with changes to the platforms we all use. I’ll try to provide info on the bigger updates to help you keep pace.

Facebook

Send money to friends via Messenger- but organizations beware….trying to collection donations this way is verboten and will get your account suspended. I’m ok with that for now...the more comfortable people get with sending $ via social platforms, the sooner people may get comfortable actually donating vs social but for now for fundraising email is still king folks

Believe it or not, in March there were no actual noticeable changes to Phred, the Facebook algorithm!

Twitter

Twitter video is now embeddable on websites

Upcoming conferences/gatherings:

Organizing 2.0- in New York...will be held April 10 and 11...more information coming soon!

Netroots Nation 2015- to be held next year close to home in Phoenix, Arizona this is a don’t miss conference.

Don't try this at home!
Another month, another NYPD social media fail

Winning the Internet:
Hands down... GroupOn wins social media for March

Also have to give a round of applause to all involved in the #BlackLivesMatter DOH (denial of hashtag) incident with the Mall of America

That’s all for now- baseball opening day next week rocks my world! Chag Sameach to those celebrating Passover and Happy Easter to those who enable my Peeps habit
