What's new to think about?

Every month as I put this newsletter together I find example after example of Twitter Townhalls gone bad. One would think that by now we’d have learned, but apparently we haven’t. So in the spirit of starting 2016 off right here’s a few things you can do on social that are similar to a Twitter Townhall without the associated Denial of Hashtag pain that accompanies them:
    Facebook Townhall- Live or Delayed*

Periscope or Live Livestream of a short Q&A

Set up a page on Wiselike and use their tools to manage the incoming questions
What other ways do you think we can avoid DoH pain?

    Training and Webinar alert:

7 Trainings in the next 2 months:
I told you last month about the trainings in Phoenix and Nashville. There are still seats available by clicking:
Introduction to Digital Organizing- Phoenix- Tues Jan 12 & Wed Jan 13
Social Media Strategy- Phoenix- Thurs Jan 14 & Fri Jan 15
Introduction to Digital Organizing- Nashville Tues Jan 19 & Wed Jan 20
Social Media Strategy- Nashville- Thurs Jan 21 & Fri Jan 22
And you’re the first to know that my first stop in February will be….Denver!
I’m really excited about this one, in addition to the doing the Introduction to Digital Organizing and Social Media Strategy we’re going to debut a new Advanced Digital Workshop- 2 days of very hands on Digital Campaign Strategy planning so that participants walk out ready to put the pieces in place and hit the ground running.
Registration is now open for all 3...spread the word!

What I'm Reading
The most informative or thought-provoking articles of the month (IMHO)
Webb Media Group: 2016 Trends- Must read alert! Every year this report is the best analysis of digital and trends that I see.

Setting Up Tv Ads with Facebook Ads (Study)- I often talk about the online/offline ad sandwich- well here’s some data that shows that in fact such a methodology does in fact have a positive effect on consumer memory

Social media news consumers at higher risk of "information bubbles", IU study says- Not really news here but a good reminder that social is about relationship building and champions and less about persuasion.

Yas We Can- While this article focuses on the Clinton campaign, it does provide great fodder for generic thinking about how we develop and use voice on social media in an effort to be authentic

Social Media Pwned the Presidential Primaries- A fun look at some of the more memorable social media moments in the primary to date

There's something odd about Donald Trump's Facebook page- Donald Trump the Newt Gingrich of 2016

Why Snapchat is "the one to watch in 2016"- at the expense of Twitter- Is Snapchat the harbinger of death for Twitter (ed note: or is it the Twitter algorithm?)

Tools
Make yourself look good with the most interesting and promising tools of the month.

PostBeyond- A dashboard to help you build and manage your team of social champions. I haven’t used it yet but will be with a new client in the next few weeks.

SocialRank for Teams- Think social CRM...it’s still in beta and pricing has yet to be announced but if priced right this could be a good addition to our social toolboxes

Platform Updates
As social media practitioners, one of our biggest challenges is keeping up with changes to the platforms we all use. I’ll try to provide info on the bigger updates to help you keep pace.

Facebook

At long last Live is available to us mere mortals
Facebook announced that it is shutting down it’s standalone app division which I find puzzling since they are moving the photo sync out of Facebook and into a new app called Moments which was released in June
They released a way for you to invite people who have liked a post on your page to like your page. Y’all know how I feel about page likes as a metric so use this at your discretion. I haven’t yet seen any data on the effectiveness or long term engagement but given that Facebook usually relies on data before releasing anything I’m guessing it’s good. Caution: The way people interact with brands is much different than the political/cause sector so again ymmv
Ticket buying - right now seems to be limited to music and sports but I’m hoping it will be generic event tickets soon
Any of you using Facebook Shop yet?
New video embed tools
Also new...the ability to search thru posts on a profile or page - only available to someone actually looking at your page which is generally speaking less than 3% of your fan base in any given month
New Page PlugIns for your website...now you can embed your events right onto your website

Twitter

Here comes the Twitter algorithm - step 1: non chronological timeline
Twitter Ads will soon be appearing on the pages of profiles and tweets when clicked through to from google or other search, meaning a person no longer has to be logged into Twitter in order to see the ads...but will they convert? Only time will tell
2 changes to image viewing on Twitter: view of images uncropped and collages

Don't try this at home!
Well for starters IBM really stepped in it with their attempt to promote STEM…
One more time: Twitter chats= DANGER ZONE
One last look at the Presidential Primary Fails so far
Your monthly catalog of laughs...

Winning the Internet:
As y’all know I loathe the “V word” so ignore the title on this one...lots of good to learn from here

Time to go pack for Dallas, Tucson, Phoenix and Nashville. I'm jumping on the postcard bandwagon started by Asher Huey so if you want postcards from the road click here

Happy 2016!
