"...within a few years we’ll all be enveloped in a weave of online social networks from waking until dark..."

I am an online marketer and social networks are now huge but attention should be turned to online reputation management. In my experience the majority of business people, politicians, celebrities and joe public that avidly add to their chosen social media platforms are forgetting to manage their reputation. The internet is for keeps and so is most of what is on it so watch what you say or else it will come back to bite you...

WEll, nowadays social networking sites has become a powerful tool in integrating not only several features of known media like Myspace or Twitter but also spreading out news about anyhting under the sun including helping out in campaigns.

Though the survey says that social networking sites areplaced at the bottom, they surely affects people who shares their views about candidates or sharing videos that they can suggest to their friends. This is a fact that we cannot ignore even if the survey says otherwise.

You make a great point, Ed -- we tend to think about these tools in isolation, but it's the combination that matters. Integration is key! (See Rule #3)

It's probably hard to separate out the exact effects of each of the different channels from the outside, since when a campaign is communicating via soc net site, whether to promote a video, a fundraising drive or just the message of the day, the staff is also almost certainly also sending out related emails to their list (perhaps several times more emails, too, and with targeted messages).

It'd be fascinating to get internal numbers to measure how the results compare among promotional tools like email, sms and soc nets. In any case, a campaign like Obama's has the resources to reach people by whatever channel the supporter chooses.

Online video is very powerful stuff, but don't overlook the value social networks have in spreading those videos around. They're often embedded into Facebook, Myspace, blogs, or Twittered about if they're particularly newsworthy well before they make the jump to the mainstream press. In face, it may be social networks that act as the catalyst for videos that change campaigns.
