the most important thing when doing search engine optimization is get a good amount of backlinks first. when you have a sufficient amount of backlinks, then you can start optimizing in page links, keyword density and other factors which affects your ranking.

So you recommend “global_warming.html” over, say, a single word URL. But are you absolutely sure that Google reads “global_warming.html” as two words (plus file extension)?? Perhaps you ought to look into this, perhaps in comparison w/ “global-warming.html”. I don’t have the time myself to get updated info on this, but a while back — maybe as far back as Dec 2008 — I seem to recall reading that Google treated “_” as, well, nothing, while treating “-” as whitespace.
